Aug, 7th 2014 - Version 1.2.7
Fleet-Up version 1.2.7 has been deployed. There are various changes in this release but I have highlighted the main ones below. For a full list please read the change log.
When I first released Fleet-Up I wanted doctrine managers to be able to define how a fleet of ships might fit together - namely how many of each type of ship would form a practical fleet. At the time I implemented the concept of a 'ratio', however, through personal experience and numerous questions and feedback I mostly pulled it because it simply fell short of what was required.
So, I've added a new feature called 'compositions' that hopefully addresses this need more directly.
The compositions area exists under doctrines and allows doctrine managers and above to define multiple groups of ships selected from the doctrine itself. More often than not in my experience the doctrines area is used to define a list of possible ships that might fit together for form a fleet but sometimes include multiple ship options to cover all bases. The compositions feature allows doctrine managers to grab an example list of ships from a doctrine and pin it up as an example fleet.
If you think of a fleet doctrine as a deck of cards then the compositions area represents a way to define some good hands. To create a composition, visit the doctrines area, open a doctrine and then click the 'compositions' tab. I hope to iterate and improve on this area in future so if you have any feedback or ideas please get in contact.
Single Sign On
Back in early July CCP Fox Four wrote a very interesting and exciting article about the future of EVE Online Single Sign On (SSO). Curious readers will notice that Fleet-Up is amongst the list of sites to be adopting SSO in the first instance. The SSO functionality will allow users to authenticate for third party sites (like this one) using their EVE online account. The big benefit of this is there are fewer accounts to manage and fewer passwords to forget.
The use of SSO for Fleet-Up will be entirely optional - users can use it if they wish or ignore it if not. If you would like to learn more about the operation and security of SSO please read this article article.
Fleet-Up version 1.2.7 includes the back end code to fully support SSO. Once CCP gives the nod for go-live on SSO, Fleet-Up will expose the functionality.
Shopping List Per-Item Flag
A few other changes and fixes have been thrown into the mix for version 1.2.7. Most notable is probably the ability to flag shopping list items as complete on a per-line basis. I've had a few people ask about this functionality over the past few weeks so I wanted to get something in place.
What's next - v1.2.8
As always, I have a bunch of requests and ideas in the backlog and a few shreads of spare time to get them done. I've had some more requests in the shopping lists area and I would like to make the price and size of items more readily available in other areas. There's a few things I'd like to look at in the new compositions area and I'd also like to take a look back at the options and user experience for users that are members of many groups.
In additional to the above I also have some ideas to make Fleet-Up more useful as a meta tool - but that's all I'm going to say about that for the moment.
If you have any questions or see any problems please get in contact.
